1950.10.6 | The Taichung prefecture was established. |
1952.1.26 | Rev. William F. Kupfer, MM, was appointed first prefect of Taichung. |
1952.8.7 | The Chiayi and Hualien prefectures were established. Msgr. Thomas Niu, Bishop of Yangku, was appointed administrator of Chiayi, and Msgr. Andrewk J. Verineux, MEP, was appointed administrator of Hualien. On this same date, Taiwan became the 21st Chinese Ecclesiastical Province. |
1952.10.26 | Msgr. Joseph Kuo was consecrated as archbishop of Taipei. |
1959.12.19 | Cardinal Tien Kenghsin succeeds Bishop Joseph Kuo as administrator of Taipei. |
1961.3.21 | Dioceses of Hsinchu and Tainan were established. Rev. Peter Tou was appointed as Bishop of Hsinchu and Rev. Stanislaus Lokuang as Bishop of Tainan. |
1961.4.1 | Kaohsiung became a diocese and Rev. Joseph Cheng was appointed as its bishop. |
1962.4.11 | Chiayi and Taichung became dioceses. Msgr. Kupfer became Bishop of Taichung and Msgr. Niu, administrator of Chiayi. |
1963.7.15 | Hualien became a diocese with Msgr. Verineux as administrator. |
1966.3.2 | Msgr. Lokuang became archbishop of Taipei and was installed on May 15th. |
1966.6.16 | Msgr. Paul Cheng, auxiliary bishop of Taipei, became the Bishop of Tainan and was installed on July 24th. |
1967 | The Chinese Bishopsˇ¦ Conference was established. Archbishop Joseph Kuo was elected as first president. |
1968.9.25 | Kinma was established as an apostolic administration with Msgr. Philip Cote, SJ, Bishop of Hsuchow as administrator. He was installed in that office on February 1, 1969. |
1969.8.20 | Msgr. Thomas Niu resigned as administrator of Chiayi. He was succeeded by Msgr. Paul Cheng. |
1970.1.16 | Death of Msgr. Cote. Msgr. Alfons Van Buggenhout, CICM, administrator of Taitung, became the administrator of Kinma. He was installed on February 13, 1970. |
1970.2.24 | Penghu was erected as an apostolic administration. Msgr. Eduard G. Quint, OFM, prefect apostolic of Weihaiwei, became its administrator. |
1970.6.13 | Msgr. Matthew Kia was appointed Bishop of Chiayi and was consecrated on July 16, 1970. |

Cardinal Agnello Rossi, prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, came to Taiwan and at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, ordained Rev. Joseph Tikang as Bishop of Chiayi and Rev. Joseph Wang as auxiliary bishop of Taipei. Bishop Tikang was installed on August 10th. |
1976.9.28 | Msgr. Thomas Pai was appointed administrator of Penghu to succeed Msgr. Quint who resigned as administrator an April 13th. |
1978.8.2 | Cardinal Yupin resigned as president of Fu Jen Catholic University. Archbishop Stanislaus Lokuang succeeded him. |
1978.8.5 | The Holy See appointed Cardinal Yupin as superintendent of Fu Jen Catholic University. |
1978.11.18 | Bishop Matthew Kia was appointed by the Holy See as archbishop of Taipei and was installed on December 16th. |
1979.4.19 | The General Assembly of the Chinese Bishops Conference elected Archbishop Matthew Kia as its president, and Bishop Paul Cheng of Tainan as vice-president. The four members of the Conference Standing Committee were elected at the same time, namely: Archbishop Joseph Kuo, Archbishop Stanislaus Lokuang, Bishop Paul Cheng and Bishop Joseph Cheng. Bishop Joseph Wang was elected as Secretary General of the CBC and Fr. Bosco Lin was invited as assistant to the secretary general. |
1979.12.10 | Cardinal Rossi conferred the title of Archbishop on Bishop Joseph Cheng, OP. |
1980.1.23 | The Holy See appointed Rev. Paul Shan, SJ, as Bishop of Hualien. He was ordained to the episcopate and assumed office on February 14th of the same year. |
1980.11.22 | The Holy See appointed Fr. Luke Liu as assistant Bishop for the diocese of Hsinchu. He was ordained to the episcopate in Hsinchu on January 1, 1981. |
1981.9.14 | Archbishop Matthew Kia was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Kinmen and Matsu by the Holy See, replacing Msgr. Alfons Van Buggenhout, CICM, incapacitated by illness. |
1983.4.13 | The Chinese Bishops Conference held a Plenary Assembly, during which elections took place. Archbishop Stanislaus Lokuang was elected president; Archbishop Matthew Kia became vice-president; Bishop Joseph Y. Wang was re-elected as secretary general. To the above three, other members added to the Permanent Committee were as follows: Archbishop Joseph Cheng of Kaohsiung, Bishop Joseph Ti-Kang of Chiayi and Bishop Paul Shan of Hualien. The Commissions of the Bishops Conference, with respective presidents, were organized as below: Commission for Doctrine of the Faith and Catechetical Instruction: Bishop Paul Cheng, President Commission for the Sacred Liturgy: Bishop Joseph Y. 1983.6.29 | Bishop Peter Tou's retirement as Ordinary of Hsinchu, having been accepted by the Holy See, was announced in Taiwan. |
1983.7.16 | Bishop Luke Liu was installed as Ordinary of Hsinchu replacing Bishop Peter Tou, incapacitated by ill health. |
